On 23 June 2023, ENTEC-NSTDA hosted an event handing over 50 e-motorcycles to taxi riders in Bangkok and Nonthaburi. Guests of honor joining the celebration included ENTEC Executive Director Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, German Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Mr Georg Schmidt, UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand Ms. Gita Sabharwal, UNEP Regional Coordinator for Chemicals and Pollution Action Dr. Mushtaq Memon, EGAT Deputy Governor Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano, Nonthaburi Governor Mr. Suthee Thongyaem and Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Mr. Chalermpon Chotinuchit.

With financial support of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protections (BMUV), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been implementing “Integrating Electric 2&3 Wheelers into Existing Urban Transport Modes in Developing and Transitional Countries” project, aimed at mainstreaming and integrating electric 2 and 3 wheelers in public transport system. The project has been launched in six countries in Southeast Asia and Africa, namely the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda to serve as a model for countries in their respective regions to replicate in order to reach global expansion.

Under the UNEP Global Electric Mobility Program, Dongguan Tailing Electric Vehicle Company Limited (TAILG) of China agreed to provide e-motorcycles to Kenya, Uganda, the Philippines and Thailand to support the electrification of public transport. In Thailand, the UNEP and ENTEC formed a partnership on a “Supporting Scaling-Up of Electric 2&3 Wheelers in Thailand” project which is currently in its 2nd phase. The main objective of this project is to support Thailand’s transition to electric wheelers by performing a study to assess Thailand’s basic transportation, constructing a future scenario of electric wheelers introduction, designing and testing an electric vehicle policy, and piloting a study of e-motorcycles in public transport system. The project is line with Thailand’s goal to achieve its carbon neutrality by 2050.

In this 2nd phase of the project, ENTEC established a collaboration with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the Stallions Company Limited (Stallions) of Thailand, and TAILG with an agreement signed on 5 May 2022. Since the inception, TAILG has shipped e-motorbike parts and battery parts for assembly in Thailand, whereas EGAT has expanded its battery swapping service to accommodate rising number of users. Stallions has assembled a number of e-motorcycles which have been properly registered as taxi motorcycles. These e-motorcycles are installed with an energy monitoring device to collect data for economic, energy and environmental performance assessment.
